On October 16, the Rock Creek Ranch held their dispersal sale. Sixty-one cutting-bred horses went through the ring and every horse was sold. Two weanlings were withdrawn because they were doing poorly and the owners decided not to stress them by sending them through the sale ring.

Pet Squirrel, a 2002 sorrel mare, topped the sale at $400,000. By Playdox out of Squirrel Tooth Alice, a daughter of CD Olena, Pet Squirrel has National Cutting Horse Association earnings of $389,160. Several offspring of hers were also sold.

One hundred percent of the horses that went through the ring were sold, for a total of $3,237,600. The average price was $53,075. The top 5 horses averaged $265,000. It seems that things are looking optimistic for the cutting horse industry as they head towards their NCHA Futurity sales in December.

Horses Unlimited held their 2nd New Mexico Breeder’s Sport Horse Auction on October 18, 2009. Here was another case of there being an auction held without many horses selling. Out of 32 horses, only 6 sold.

The high selling horse was Sea Siren, a 1998 Hanoverian mare, brought $20,000. By Stakkato out of Gold Lady, she was a solid Level 4 mare with show experience. A  2006 daughter of her’s was also offered in the sale but did not sell.

Low selling horse was Baton Rouge, a 2007 PHR (Performance Horse Registry) mare. Out of a Paint stallion, Old Time Express, and an unregistered mare named Rama, she brought $900.

With only 6 horses selling, the sale percentage was a very low 19%. The average price was $9,833, with the top 5 averaging $11,620. It seems that with these results the idea of having a 3rd auction next year should be mulled over very carefully.

On October 17th at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association presented the Congress Super Sale. It is held during the All-American Quarter Horse Congress and contains some of the cream of the Quarter Horse breed. Horses sired by and mares bred to black-type stallions are offered to the public, many of them with impressive show records. Fitted-up, immaculate horses with impeccable pedigrees make this sale one of the premier Quarter Horse sales in the country.

The high selling horse, Goodalldaylong, was an excellent example of the type of horse that this sale is known for. Selling for $28,000, he has 84.5 AQHA points and an Open & Amateur Western Pleasure ROM (Register of Merit). The 2003 sorrel gelding was sired by Zippos Mr Good Bar, the National Snaffle Bit Association’s #3 All-Time Leading Sire and an AQHA Top 10 Leading Sire of Performance ROM, and out of a daughter of Potential Investment.

Out of the 201 horses listed in the catalog, 152 sold for a sale percentage of 78%. The average price was $5,786. The top 5 sellers averaged $21,500. Due to the economy the prices were lower than last year, but the quality of the horses consigned was just as high.

It was spotted pony heaven October 6 through the 10th at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. The 2009 International POAC (Pony of the Americas Club) Futurity Show was held on the 7th & 8th, with the 2009 International Sale on the 9th & 10th wrapping up the week. One hundred ninety-seven ponies, from weanlings to proven show horses, were listed in the sale. Some even had winnings and show experience from the recent futurity.

The high selling pony, Judge Roy Bean, brought $6,100. This 2006 chestnut roan gelding, with a blanket to the shoulders with spots, is a son of CR Star Kid out of Starlight Starbright. He had 60 days professional training and had been started in showmanship.

Of the 197 ponies offered, 141 were sold with 6 being out and 50 of them no-saled. The top selling ponies (there were 6) averaged $4,800. The sale average was 72%, with the ponies averaging $1,228. The sluggish economy contributed to the fact that the prices were lower than last year’s.

Saturday, October 10, the Shoemaker-Eddleman Quarter Horse Production Sale was held at the Oar Lock Ranch in Worden, Montana. The horses offered were a good mix of running and old-time cow blood that makes an athletic all-around horse for ranching, rodeo, and riding. All these horses were solid, good-footed ranch raised animals with a can-do attitude, from the weanlings all the way up to the finished horses.

The broke geldings were the leaders in the sale. The top 5 sellers,well started and finished geldings, averaged $7,660. A Smokin Surprise, a 1998 grey gelding, was the high seller at $10,000. A grandson of Peppy San Badger, he was a ranch horse with a lot of cutting skills in the sorting pen and had been roped on.

Seventy-four horses were sold, with a sale average of $1,392.

The ABC Quarter & Paint Horse 3rd Annual Production Sale was held October 3 at the HS Bar Ranch in Soldier, Kansas. One hundred Kansas-raised AQHA and APHA weanlings, yearlings, prospects and broodmares were offered to the public. A variety of colors and the patterns of the Paint horses were a feast to the eye.

Due to the fact that I arrived a bit late to the sale, I don’t have any information on the high selling horse other than it was a substitution and sold for $950. The 2nd high seller was a 5 year old grade dun mare with 60 days riding that sold for $700. The top 5 sellers brought an average of $680.

Out of the 100 horses listed, 19 were out and 20 no-saled. Sixty-one horses sold for a sale average of 61%, with the average price being $205. Many of the sale offerings were 2009 models and it’s a buyer’s market for the babies right now.

Shannon Creek Cattle Co. held their 2nd production sale Sunday, October 4, in Manhattan, Kansas. The 50 Quarter Horses listed consisted of 28 foals, 6 broodmares, 1 stallion,  and 14 performance geldings and saddle mares from 3-5 years old. The horses, raised in the Flint Hills country, were the athletic, all-around Quarter Horse type that could do ranch work, perform in the arena, and just be a pleasure to ride. In addition, they offered a special attraction of 4 adorable miniature foals for sale.

SAH Peponita Kat 406, a 2004 sorrel gelding, was the high seller of the sale. Bringing $4,800, this stout gelding was a go all day, do whatever you want kind of horse with Hancock and Peponita breeding.

Out of the 54 horses, 51 were sold for a sale percentage of 94%. The average sale price was $1,295, with the top 5 sellers averaging $3,190.

Thursday, October 1, Jamison Herefords & Quarter Horses held their 6th annual Quarter Horse Sale at the ranch in Quinter, Kansas. The 110 horses offered consisted of 50 geldings (from started to finished, 3 to 15 years old), 19 saddle mares (many broodmare quality prospects), 1 performance stallion prospect (a well started 2 year old), and 40 2009 foals (fancy stud, filly, and gelding prospects).

The performance stallion prospect, JA Tuckerwood Frost, was the high seller. By PC Frost Em Peppy, a son of Sun Frost, out of JA Lady Tuckerwood, the 2007 bay roan brought $10,000. Besides being good looking and athletic, he is intensely linebred, going back to Driftwood 10 times.

Since 2 horses tied for 3rd highest seller and 4th highest seller, I’m going to report the average for the top 6 high selling horses. These horses brought an average price of $8,917.

Of the 110 listed, 106 sold for an average price of $2,737. The sale percentage was 96%, proving that although the horse market has taken a beating during the recession, it is far from being dead.

On Saturday, September 26, a 40 year old tradition came to an end. Maynard Alves Quarter Horses of Redmond, Oregon held a complete dispersal sale. Having established a herd of horses that represent what a Quarter Horse should be, the Alves Ranch has been among the top 50 ranches in AQHA  in the number of horses registered. Some of the best bloodlines in Quarter Horses were offered in this sale.

The high selling horse in the sale was no exception. Starlight N Freckles, a 1998 sorrel stallion, brought the top price of $11,500. A son of Grays Starlight out of a granddaughter of Jewels Leo Bars, he earned 0.5 AQHA points in cutting and NCHA earnings of $2,467.31, besides being the sire of 107 foals with 3 performers.

Three hundred and forty-seven horses sold, with the average price of $836. The top 5 sellers averaged $7,340. With the Alves’ retiring, this sale represents the end of an era.
